Specifically (for XP, maybe Vista) Remote Assistance & Remote Desktop are here:
Start> right click ‘My Computer’> Properties> Remote tab; here, uncheck both for the tightest lockdown> OK out.
Be aware though, that because of the fluid nature of Windows OS (any flavor) and the hundreds of flaws in the ‘out-of-the-box’ configurations it has, there can be remote access if something is injected that leverages one of them.
So, system configuration and security perimeter defense actually becomes more critical than the above mentioned ‘Remote’ items.
