This may seem complicated with the three different steps but it’s preferable to a lot of the rubbish like GoToMyPc and such, these programs really just repackage what Windows can do by itself onto a website and throw ads at you.

Download and install Hamachi from hamachi.cc following the very simple instructions they provide. Join it to a new network by making up a name and password for it.

On your computer at home (I am going to assume it’s Windows XP) rightclick on My Computer and click on the remote tab. Check the box that says “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer”.

Install Hamachi at your away location (after clearing it with the person who manages your network if it’s at work).

When away, go to start->run and type ‘mstsc’ (without the quotes). Enter the IP address of your home computer as it appears in the Hamachi window. You will then have remote access to you remote computer.

All this functionality is built into Windows (Hamachi just makes it easy to securely connect to your computer across the internet), it’s not neccessary to pay for it and put the security in the hands of someone else.
