What is the best and most secure way to allow remote access?

by admin on December 29, 2009

We just set up a new network for a process and we need to allow our partners remote access to the information on the servers. One of people on my team is really pushing for PC Anywhere. Someone else wants GoToMyPc. I just want to use the VPN and remote access that’s already on Microsoft server and buy user liscneses. What are the pros and cons? Any recommendations.

It really depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you want to give them access to applications then VPN is the most secure route and since you are already running Windows Server it is cost effective too.

If you’re just trying to share data then a webserver is an easy way to go because you can secure access to the data and using https: ensures all data transmission is encrypted.

Another option is GoToMyPc.

I recommend just using an FTP with a username and password and dumping all files that are going to be shared. I think its easier and its definately cheaper. However, I don’t know what kind of scale this is going to be used for.
