My mother lives 100 miles away and I am looking for an easy to use (for her) and preferable free remote access software package that will let me access her computer from mine to help her with problems when she has them.

I would suggest GoToMyPc. It is secure and very easy to use for both you and your mother.
If you are looking for a free program, I would recommend you and your mother to try windows desktop program for remote access needs. But my personal concern is that free programs often limit in features but the specialized programs like rhubcom.com offer many more advanced features like firewall protection, remote reboot and so on. It’s even much more easy to setup and simple to use appliance.
