I brought my laptop into work today and they set up remote access. I have a password and everything on something called a VPN, and every time I try to connect to it, it says Error 800: unable to establish a VPN connection. Does the computer at my work have to be on for me to be able to log into the other computer?

The firewall at your company is stopping you. You need to work with your IT group, who will most likely not be really understanding about you wanting to open a hole in their firewall. Then, it they have their system set up as a domain, they will be even LESS happy about you wanting to take remote control of a domain registered computer from an unregistered one.
